Maximalist Packaging We Love: Klint Care

Alongside our original series Minimalist Packaging We Love, we now present: Maximalist Packaging We Love. Because why should the minimalist get to have all the fun?!

Klint Care, the Danish skincare brand focused on natural ingredients and artist collaborations, knows that enjoying art is something that shouldn’t only be reserved for wealthy collectors. What if, instead of only having art on your walls, you incorporated it into your every day items, such as hand soap and lotion? It’s the small luxuries in life that can make all the difference.

We spoke with Klint Care founder and owner, Hans-Emil Kjær, about the brand and why he loves working with artists:

When and why did you found Klint Care

The main inspiration to Klint Care is my mother, Hanne Kjær. She is an artist and throughout my upbringing I have seen her paint on things such as chairs, clothes, walls, photos and anything else that needed color. So it was not a big jump in my mind to transfer art to skincare.

I am not an artist myself, but I enjoy the positive energy art brings to me, and that is the feeling I hope to share with others through Klint Care.

The idea of Klint Care is actually rather old, but I took the leap of faith one year ago, and was able the release Klint Care in December 2020.

How did you develop these formulas and why did you choose the scent notes that you did?

I developed the formulas in collaboration with skincare experts; it took us about six months to get the formulas right.

Klint Care is based on vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and fatty acids from natural sources. I have spent countless hours researching natural extracts and oils for these nutrients and their benefits to skin.

Based on that research, I put together the formulas with my manufacturer and that is how we made the base of our formulas. For the scent, I wanted it to be subtle and evoke a feeling of proximity to nature. To achieve this result, we used natural, essential oils with citric, woody, and herbal notes.

What was the collaboration process like?

I found the artists on Instagram, and the collaborations were quite straightforward. I presented the concept and vision for Klint Care, and asked if they would be interested in making art for the products.

The artists worked differently; some of the artists already had a clear vision of what they wanted to do, and some wanted to involve me in the ideating process. It was very important for me that I kept my involvement to a minimum, as I wanted the artists to express themselves.

In addition, the artists directly make 5% of sales from the products.

How would you like a person using your products to feel?

I hope that Klint Care products will bring a big smile to your face when you see the art, and give you that special “treat yourself” feeling when using the products.

The three current artist collaborations are with Yanii Prutii, Emma Rodriguez, and Natascha Baumgärtner. Each artist’s series is unique, yet together, they have a kind of visual harmony that makes the sets easy to mix-and-match.

Yanii Prutii

Illustrator Yanii Prutii, based in Karlsruhe, Germany, has created a series focused on feminine communion with nature. Finding inspiration in plants and organic shapes, Prutii’s illustrations are serene and calming. They complement the woody and herbaceous elements of the soap and lotion scents perfectly.

Emma Rodriguez

Bristol, UK-based artist Emma Rodriguez (also known as MOONCRAB) has a playful and dynamic style that utilizes cut-outs and collage to create an alternate landscape. Her series of bottles have elements of pop art, including bright colors, image layering, and symbolic imagery that draws on ideas of self-love and body positivity. Exactly what you want to see when you’re pumping out your body lotion! The citrus note of the soap and lotion is well-represented in Rodriguez’s series.

Natascha Baumgärtner

Designer and illustrator Natascha Baumgärtner has created the most minimalist of the Klint Care collaborations. Her work isn’t simple, but it is clean and pleasing to the eye. There’s texture and depth to her colors, and a sense of bodies swimming in a vast body of water: just the feeling of being enveloped in luxurious, rich lotion.
